Here’s Rolling Stone’s LEGENDARY Photo Director Jodi Peckman, pictured with Obama, at their recent Rolling Stone cover shoot. The cover is amazing, and can be seen in the post just prior to this. I met with Jodi in New York recently, and she explained to me how the shoot came about She said that she deliberately used a new young photographer (name to follow), as that seemed appropriate for her subject. And then, on the shoot, she sat down by Obama’s feet and encouraged him to look down at her, and not at the camera. She then managed to convince Jann Wenner to run the cover without a single coverline.
That has only happened twice before in Rolling Stone’s history: the death of John Lennon, which was rightly acclaimed by the ASME as the greatest magazine cover of all time, and the death of George Harrison, which just so happened to be the very first cover I had to design when I became Art Director of Rolling Stone back in 2001. At the time this seemed akin to getting a bye into round two of the typography world cup.
